Harvey County accident claims the life of Florence woman

NEWTON – A 50-year-old Florence, Kansas woman has died after a crash involving a semi Monday evening just east of Newton.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Roberta Ann Winter was eastbound on U-S 50, and attempted to pass a vehicle on the left which had stopped, waiting to make a left turn on East Lake Road. Winter then struck that vehicle, forcing that vehicle out of the way, but then her vehicle spun around into the westbound lane of traffic and was struck by a westbound semi.

Winter was pronounced dead at the scene, and her body taken to the Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center for possible autopsy.

The driver of the vehicle which had stopped, 30-year-old Luke M. Schmidt of Socorro, New Mexico was not injured, nor was the driver of the semi, Randy A. Henlon of Kansas City, Missouri.

The accident occurring just after 5 p-m Monday evening in Harvey County.
