NEWTON, Kan. — Of the 15 square miles affected in Harvey County, 100 percent of the fire is contained and approximately 80 percent is complete.

Officials say they are monitoring the changing weather conditions as the wind speed and direction are expected to change throughout the day Friday. There are hot spots within the burned area that can flare up easily with the shift in wind. Their primary focus will remain to be protection of property and outbuildings.

Yes, we still have crews out working the active fire that remains and plan to staff this incident throughout the holiday weekend and into next week as well.

Barricades have been removed from Burmac Road.
