A 23-year-old Hutchinson man who is on community corrections for convictions of aggravated battery, theft, sale of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia for growing marijuana and no tax stamp will get an evidentiary hearing.

Leonardo J. Velázquez-Vieyra made a court appearance in front of Judge Tim Chambers Friday over the cases going back to 2006, and 2009, one of which involves the shooting of a Hutchinson man, Jordan Thomas. Thomas and another man had shown up at an apartment where in east Hutchinson where Velázquez-Vieyra was staying, and Thomas was shot in the face with a shotgun. He lost his left eye as a result.

Velázquez-Vieyra has since been arrested on four new cases also involving the sale of marijuana, he could be ordered to prison for the previous cases, if the state has their way.

In court, his public defender, Bonnie Corrado told the judge that they wanted to try to work some type of deal out with the state. Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton then suggested the judge set it for the evidentiary hearing.

The state is seeking to revoke his community corrections because of his alleged dealing in drugs since him entering pleas in previous cases.

In three of the four new cases, he’s charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, and no tax stamp. The first complaint is alleged to have occurred on June 21, the second on August 29, and the third on September 7. The final case involves a charge of being in possession of drug proceeds.

The state had previously stated that he had 3-pounds of pot in one case, and over a pound in each of the other cases.

Bond in the new cases set at 175-thousand dollars, and twice, he has been denied any reduction in that bond.

No date for the evidentiary hearing was announced.
