A Hutchinson man suspected in the murder of a Hutchinson woman in April of last year was bound over for trial today in a separate case of aggravated battery, involving the shooting of a Hutchinson man in November of 2010.

Charles “Christopher” Logsdon is charged for shooting Eric Harbacek in the leg after an altercation on November 26, 2010.

The victim testified that a friend had called him and asked him to come to a home in the south part of Hutchinson. He say he arrived and at one point was sitting on the couch at the home at 108 South Severance. That’s apparently where Logsdon was apparently living, and he was arguing over prison stuff with another man sitting on the couch with him and Logsdon shot him in the leg. He says he heard a “pop” and then the burning on his leg. He says he asked Logsdon, “are you kidding, you shot me?”

The friend who called Harbacek was Tobias Decker who apparently was in the process of moving to the home. The victim told the court that Decker had struck him with the truck prior to the shooting, something Decker denied.

He says he didn’t go to the hospital for treatment until the next day, and says they had to dig the slug out of him. He showed Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen the scars. The judge stated on the record that in entrance scar appeared to be about 3/8’s of an inch, and the exit scar was about 3/4’s of an inch. It was at the hospital the next day that police got involved in the case.

On the stand, Decker stated that he and Harbacek had been riding around but that Harbacek was so intoxicated that he told him to take him back to his truck, or he would call police. When they got back, Harbacek got angry claiming someone had stolen his drugs. Decker claims he was in his truck, warming it when Harbacek began pounding in his truck. He says he finally left, but denies he ever struck him.

He also told of being called by Logsdon to come back over to the house. He says when he arrived he told him, “he put a cap in him,” referring to Harbacek. When asked what he took that to mean? Decker says it meant he shot him. He also told him that he got rid of the gun and started to clean the blood up.

Also on the stand Tuesday was Hutchinson Police Lt. Thad Pickard who was a detective for the department at the time. Pickard told the court of the search warrant that was served on the home where they found some 25-caliber ammo, and a 25-caliber shell casing. He says Logsdon denied even being in Hutchinson that night, saying he had been in Salina.

KBI Special Agent Jeff Newsom also testified that Logsdon brought up this shooting incident a couple of times while he was interviewing Logsdon over the murder of Jennifer Heckel. Newsom says he did six interviews with Logsdon, the first being on August 6, 2011, in Hastings, Nebraska, then the rest when he was brought back to Hutchinson. On one occasion, he admitted that he had a 25-caliber semi-automatic. That was during an interview on August 11, and then on August 31, the shooting came up again, and Logsdon allegedly told the agent, I’m a professional criminal, if I wanted him dead, he would be dead.

Logsdon told Newsom that Harbacek busted open the door of the home and had a padlock in one hand, a knife in another as well as a rebel flag. He claims Harbacek called him a bad name using the N-word.

Judge McEwen had no problem finding probable cause in this case, and set arraignment in the case for February 6 at 8:30 a-m.

It just so happens thats the same date that Logsdon along with 48-year-old Billy Craig, Jr., will face a preliminary hearing for the murder of Jennifer Heckel who was found shot to death in her northwest Hutchinson home in June of last year.

Both men could see the state seek a Hard 50 sentence in that case if they’re convicted.
