HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 29-year-old man who held Hutchinson Police at bay back in December and is accused of stabbing a Hutchinson woman entered a plea Monday.

Toby Hippen was charged with attempted first-degree murder, or in the alternative, aggravated battery. He entered a plea to the battery charge, and attempted murder and a third charge of aggravated burglary were dismissed.

He’s now guilty of forcing his way into a residence of a Hutchinson woman and stabbing her repeatedly and then fleeing the scene. She was eventually taken to a Wichita-area hospital in serious condition.

He was later found at a home where he held police at bay, closing down a portion of west 5th street. He eventually surrendered without incident.

You may recall Hippen as being convicted of causing severe injuries to a 2-year-old child. He was granted two years community corrections for two counts of aggravated battery, and one count of aggravated endangerment of a child.

He was discharged from corrections in that case in April of 2014.

With him entering the plea, he faces a maximum sentence of over 14 years in prison.
