HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The 35-year-old Hutchinson man arrested after he allegedly fled local law enforcement has been formally charged.

Dominic Vargas is now charged with two alternate counts of flee or attempt to elude law enforcement. In one case, they say he attempted to avoid a tire deflation device and the other he engaged in reckless driving.

Other charges include possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana with a prior conviction, possession of Oxycodone and being a criminal carrying a weapon, which was brass knuckles.

It started a little before 6 p.m. on June 27 when he was spotted getting gas in South Hutchinson by law enforcement and they knew he had warrants. Reno County Sheriff Deputies and South Hutchinson Police officers attempted to stop his truck.

Vargas refused to stop and allegedly drove into Hutchinson where Hutchinson Police officers joined the chase. Vargas continued to flee into the county with speeds at times from 90 to 100 mph.

At the intersection of U.S. 50 and Haven Road, a Sheriff deputy lost control and rolled his vehicle into a field. He was wearing his seat belt and airbags deployed. He was transported by another sheriff deputy to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center where he was checked out and released.

The chase continued south on Haven Road for approximately five more miles where a Haven Police Officer had a tire deflation device deployed. Vargas drove off the roadway again to avoid the device when deputies collided with his vehicle. His vehicle eventually rolled and ended up on its side.

He refused any treatment by Reno County EMS and was then taken and booked into the Reno County Correctional Facility.

With the charges filed, his case will move to a waiver-status docket in front of Judge Joe McCarville on Aug. 10.
