HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Despite having a large presence in Iowa and a wind turbine blade facility in Ft. Madison, it appears Siemens has lost out on what would be the largest wind farm ever constructed.

Mid American Energy tells hutchpost.com that they are going with Vestas for the 2000 MW wind project in Iowa. Mid America has filed a request with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) to build Wind XI, project. That request has not been approved at this time.

The proposed $3.6bn project is the largest wind project Mid American Energy has ever undertaken, and it’s being done without asking for an increase in customer rates or financial assistance from the state to pay for it.

Siemens has been a major  player in Mid American’s wind energy platform providing most of the turbines in the company’s wind sector. Siemens appeared to be the front runner in getting the project, but Mid American indicated last month they were going in a different direction.

The contract would have been a mega order for the Hutchinson nacelle facility, but now it appears that won’t happen.
