WICHITA, Kan. — It’s not an unusual occurrence in jails and correctional facilities where inmates flush items down the toilets causing plumbing issues.

The latest example happened Monday in Wichita. At around 1:00 p.m, sewer lines in a housing unit of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility became blocked. Officials say that a plumbing company was called and the blockage was cleared at about 8:30 p.m.

The source of the blockage was found to be plastic bags, trash, and several towels that had been flushed down the toilets by unknown inmates in the housing unit.

The blockage caused some flooding issues in the facility, which affected about 85 inmates. The inmates from the affected area were moved to a gymnasium until the problem was resolved.

This is the second sewer back-up in the last two months due to inmates flushing large items and intentionally causing a sewer back-up.
