29-year-old Deron McCoy Jr.. was found guilty Thursday afternoon of most of the counts against him, but “not guilty,” for others including one of the kidnapping charges.

McCoy was charged with 18-counts involving a standoff with police back on March 22nd, of last year.

The jury also found him, “not guilty,” on one of 6-counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, as well as possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The one kidnapping count against him was for allegedly restraining his 7-month old child, but the defense argued that his child was not restrained, and was not threatened because she was in his custody. The jury apparently agreed. They also didn’t agree with one of the aggravated assault count against Hutchinson Police Sgt. Brice Burlie when he allegedly tried to pull the officers handgun from his holster.

They also didn’t believe he was in possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia, even though there was a pipe found that had meth residue inside. There was also a scale found above the ceiling tiles in the motel room. Officers testified that there was a lot of dirt on the tiles, but the scale was clean, meaning it probably had not been there very long. But the jury apparently thought it was possible that someone else could have placed it there.

The case centers on domestic dispute when McCoy and the mother of his child were arguing over whether he would give her their child, but also whether she would enter the motel room.

He was staying in a room at the Budget Inn Motel at 4th & Washington. After repeated attempts to contact him, police officials decided to rush into the room, and McCoy allegedly had a gun pointed in the direction of a woman he calls his sister, and is also accused of using the baby as a shield in front of his head when officers entered. He was taken into custody without incident. He denies that he ever held the baby to shield himself.

The jury began their deliberations at 9 a-m Thursday morning and reached a verdict about 2:10 p-m, Thursday afternoon.

Deputy District Attorney Tom Stanton told reporters right after the verdict was read that he’s happy with the juries decisions, despite McCoy being found not guilty on some of the charges. He told us he believes justice has been served.

District Judge Tim Chambers set sentencing for February 24 at at 10:30 a-m.
