HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Reno County Commission Tuesday approved a contract to purchase land east of the Highlands in the northern part of the county to building a lagoon system for that addition.

This is something which has been in the works for over a year and they’ll purchase the roughly 20 acres for the facility with an easement or access road going east off of Monroe just north of the main entrance to the Highlands.

The cost for the land is $84,000 which will actually be paid by Sewer District 8. However, there are some contingency’s with the contract for the purchase. The sewer district would have to conduct a geology study in order to collect Geotech information to determine the suitability for building a lagoon on that property for the preliminary site approval from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. If this is not approved, then the sewer district would have the option to terminate the agreement to purchase the land.

The sewer district would also need to issue $1,200,000 in temporary notes or bonds to pay for the construction and would have 60-days to have the temporary notes in place. If for some reason, they’re unable to accomplish that, the contract for the purchase would become null and void.

Again, the commission agreed to proceed with the plan for the purchase.
