HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The No. 20-ranked Hutchinson Community College volleyball team had 21 more kills than Garden City on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.

Yet, the Blue Dragons struggled to sweep away the Broncbusters in a 3-0 Jayhawk West victory. Hutchinson dominated the opening set, but held on for a 25-16, 25-23, 26-24 victory for the Blue Dragons’ fourth-consecutive win, all by sweep.

Hutchinson (5-2, 3-0 Jayhawk West) racked up 46 total kills to 25 for Garden City (2-6, 1-3). After the first set, though, the Blue Dragons were at times their own worst enemy. HCC had to overcome 11 attack errors and eight service errors over the final two sets, both of which were decided by only two points. For the match, Hutch had 14 hitting errors and 13 service errors.

Freshman Nadine Cruz led the Blue Dragons with 11 kills on 17 swings to hit a season-high .529.

Freshman Page Hiebert hit .250 and finished with nine kills on 20 attacks. Sophomore Hinalei Fihaki had had eight kills and hit .455. Seven different Blue Dragons had at least three kills.

Freshman setter Katie Jorn finished with 25 assists, eight digs and two kills. Freshman setter Nicole Rutherford had 16 assists.

Sophomore libero Mine Cetinoz and freshman defensive specialist Kelsey Mulligan also had eight digs each. Mulligan had three of Hutch’s five team ace serves.
