HCC soccer team downs Dodge City

DODGE CITY – Former All-American Melissa Hetherington was the only member of the single-game jazminsix-goal club in Hutchinson Community College women’s soccer history.

That club just inducted one more member on Wednesday as the Blue Dragons opened the 2016 Jayhawk West schedule at Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium.

Sophomore Jordan Downing scored six goals and added an assist for a 13-point game as Hutchinson rolled to its fourth-straight win to open the season with a10-1 victory over the Conquistadors.

Hutchinson is now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Jayhawk West. Dodge City falls to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the league. Hutchinson will play host to Barton at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Salthawk Sports Complex.

Downing’s six-goal game is only the fourth in Blue Dragon program history and first since Oct. 22, 2012. The other three belong to Hetherington – she owns the single-game record of seven and had two-other six-goal games.

Downing’s career-high13 single-game points tied Hetherington for second in single-game history. She had four goals and nine points in Hutchinson’s seven-goal second half.

The Blue Dragon sophomore forward doubled her goal total for the season on Wednesday. Downing how has 12 points, seven assists and 29 points. With the offensive outburst, Downing jumps into Hutchinson’s career Top 10 for goals scored with 27 career goals.
