Two weeks after a nine-goal victory at Dodge City, the No. 13-ranked Hutchinson Community College
women’s soccer team found rematch with the Conquistadors on Wednesday as a much tougher battle.
A one-goal game through the first 80 minutes, the Blue Dragons scored two late goals to complete the season sweep with Dodge City with a 4-1 Jayhawk West victory at the Salthawk Sports Complex.
The Blue Dragons improve to 7-1 overall and remain perfect in the Jayhawk West at 4-0. Dodge City falls to 3-4 and 1-3.
Freshman Sheena Nicol had a goal and an assist to lead a statistically dominant Blue Dragon performance Hutchinson outshot Dodge City 30-6, putting 16 shots on goal.
HCC owned possession but finally got one past Dodge City goalkeeper Emily Goldman in the 42nd minute when Sophomore Jordan Downing scored her nation-leading 17th goal of the season from a Jayde Miyamento assist. HCC led 1-0 at halftime.
The early stages of the second half played out the same way. Sophomore Jazmin Hartshorn knocked him her ninth goal of the season from a Georgia Warren assist in the 59th minute for a 2-0 Blue Dragon lead.
Dodge City made things interesting in the 70th minute when Joanna Tumbleson scored to cut the Dragon lead to 2-1.
The Blue Dragons finally put the Conquistadors away when Nicol scored her 10th goal of the season from an Emilee Kreibehl assist for a 3-1 Hutch lead. Just 3 minutes, 12 seconds later, Kreibehl scored her first career goal, knocking home a Nicol corner kick in the 85th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Ashley Main made her first career start and earned her first victory recording one save. Goldman had 11 saves for the Conquistadors.
