Hour long pursuit by Harvey County Deputies enters Reno County briefly

Harvey County Sheriff Deputies were involved in a pursuit of a vehicle in the area of US 50 and S. Prairie Lake Road Monday.

NEWTON – Harvey County Sheriff Deputies were involved in a pursuit of a vehicle in the area of U-S 50 and S. Prairie Lake Road that went into Reno County briefly, but then went back into Harvey County.

During the pursuit, a male passenger in the vehicle contacted Harvey County Communications and advised that the female driver was armed and stated she was not going to go back to prison and threatened to kill him along with a female passenger in the car who was 8-months pregnant. The driver wanted the deputies to back off from the chase.

The chase continued throughout Harvey County for about an hour. The chase came to an end in the area of NW 48th and Golden Prairie in a field by a creek.

The driver, identified as 21 year old Nicole Chaffin of Hutchinson. She ran from the car taking with her a loaded 12-gauge shot gun. Deputies located Chaffin in a wooded area by the creek. She was taken into custody without further incident.

Chaffin was arrested for felony flee and elude, possession of stolen property, obstruction, reckless driving, and outside warrants, but officials say further charges may be pending.

She is also listed as an absconder according to the Kansas Department of Corrections for convictions of burglary here in Reno County from 2010.
