A big night from right-side hitters Nadine Cruz and Nina Pevic lifted the Hutchinson Community College
volleyball team to a key Jayhawk West victory over the Cloud County Thunderbirds on Wednesday night at the Sports Arena.
Hutchinson maintained its second-place tie with Seward County in the Jayhawk West with a 25-11, 25-11, 16-25, 25-15 victory over Cloud County. Hutchinson improves to 18-11 overall and 9-2 in the Jayhawk West. Hutch trails first-place Colby by one game.
Cruz hit .500 or better for the fourth time this season, hitting .526 against the Thunderbirds with a match-high 13 kills on 21 attacks. Cruz added three block assists.
Pevic hit .471 with 10 kills on 17 attacks. She added a career-best eight total blocks, including one solo block. Sophomore middle Hinalei Fihaki was next with seven kills on .384 hitting. Fihaki had eight block assists. Freshman Shania Werner chipped in six kills.
The Blue Dragons tied a season high with 15 total blocks. Freshman middle Patricia Joseph had six total blocks, including a solo stuff.
Freshman setter Katie Jorn led with 23 assists. Freshman setter Nicole Rutherford had 18 assists, three ace serves and a kill. Sophomore libero Mine Cetinoz had a team-high 12 digs. Freshman defensive specialist Kelsey Mulligan had seven digs and two aces.
Hutch out-hit Cloud County 47-26 and out-blocked the Thunderbirds 15-7. HCC also had six aces.
Cara Flach had nine kills and two blocks to lead Cloud County (11-13 overall).
