COLUMBUS – At around 10:13 a-m, a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s office transportation can was involved in a traffic accident on K-7 in Crawford County.

According to officials, there were two Sedgwick County deputies and nine inmates who received or are receiving medical treatment at regional medical facilities.

The two deputies have been identified as 39-year-old Nadia Betancourt and 44-year-old Kelvin Hicks. Both received injuries, but it hasn’t been determined yet whether either will be admitted to a hospital.

Eight of the nine inmates have been treated and released, while a ninth is still being evaluated. The names of the inmates are not being released according to sheriff department officials until family members or those on their emergency contact list are notified.

The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. They report that both vehicles were northbound on K-7, and a vehicle driven by 27-year-old Kimberly Dawn Preston of Columbus, Kansas attempted to turn around. Hicks who was driving the Sedgwick County van then swerved to miss Preston’s car. The van then went into a ditch and struck a power pole.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office transports and housed inmates at multiple detention facilities across the state, so it’s not unusual for one of their vans to be in southeat Kansas.
