Possible scam targeting Hutchinson residents for social security numbers

Possible scam targeting Hutchinson residents for social security numbers

A Hutchinson woman told the Hutch Post Thursday that she took a phone call at her elderly mother’s home from a foreign man saying he was from medical services and that they were going to send out new medicare cards. The man then stated he needed to verify the elderly woman’s social security numbers, telephone numbers and address.

We can tell you this is a common scam used by those wanting to steal identity and also gain access to personal accounts.

Just a reminder, never-ever give out any personal information, especially your social security number to anyone. If someone ask for information, tell them to send it through the mail, which is what anyone from Medicaid of Medicare would do.

Also, then hang-up and report the call to police. These individuals like to prey on the elderly especially, so don’t be fooled or intimidated. If your not sure about the caller, simply hang-up.

There have been reports of elderly residents in other communities that have fallen for this and have gotten burned because of it.
