SHAWNEE (AP) – The fire chief in a Kansas City suburb says an apartment fire that killed two people originated in a pan on a stove top.

Firefighters were called to the Carlyle Apartments complex in Shawnee around 5 a-m Friday.

Shawnee Fire Chief John Mattox says Crews found only light smoke in hallways, but heavy smoke coming from a ground-floor apartment.

A man and woman in the apartment were pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was identified as 21-year-old Jay’d Griffin, and the man as 23-year-old JaMaur Smith. The preliminary autopsies showed both died of smoke inhalation.

Mattox says the fire was accidental. He says the apartment had a smoke detector, but the battery had been removed.
