Very old headstones found in a ditch in Sedgwick County are from Wichita cemetery (Updated)

WICHITA – On Thursday, Sedgwick County Sheriff Deputies located six headstones in a roadway ditch in the 5700 block of West 87th street.

Investigators learned Tuesday that all six are from the Highland Cemetery at 1000 North Hillside in Wichita. Investigators spoke with employees and confirmed the stones were missing. Highland employees are filing a police report with the Wichita Police Department.

Sheriff Officials say they received numerous phone calls, e-mails, and tips from online genealogists who helped in the identification of the cemetery.

Officials say the stones are very old ranging from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s. The following names and dates are carved into the stones. Mary Lawson, 1907, Timothy Steele, 1877, Joseph Mohan, 1877, Timothy O’Conner, 1867, Birtie Summers, 1881 and Henry Steele 1877.

All information received from tips is being forwarded to Wichita Police for assistance of their case.
