Track work hampering Amtrak SW Chief schedule

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Track work is creating the usual summer headaches for Amtrak’s SW Chief.

The train, which passes through Hutchinson at 2:20 a.m. going east, and 3:20 a.m. heading west, has been hit with numerous delays due to track work in California and New Mexico. While Amtrak says the delays are up to two hours, some have had the eastbound train getting into Hutchinson as much as six hours late. The track work in New Mexico where most of the delay is occurring is expected to be finished by late July.

The route through Hutchinson is not alone on the Amtrak system as summer track maintenance and a large increase in train traffic due to an improving economy is making for delays on all routes.

Most long-distance trains are running about one to three hours late.
