HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Buoyed by a 25 percent jump in coal shipments, Union Pacific reported a second quarter net income of nearly $1.2 billion, and a second quarter record of $1.45 per diluted share, as the
second quarter earnings reports for companies with ties to the area begin another run. The carrier reported net income of about $1 billion, or $1.17 per diluted share, in the second quarter 2016.
The nation’s largest railroad and fourth-highest property taxpayer in Reno County reported operating revenues of $5.3 billion, up 10 percent in the 2017 second quarter compared to the 2016 second quarter. Second quarter business volumes, as measured by total revenue carloads, increased 5 percent compared to 2016. Volume increased in coal, industrial products, agricultural products and intermodal, although the railroad did see declines in chemicals and automotive.
