HUTCHINSON, Kan. — An overnight fire in the 700 block of East 7th was caused by faulty electrical wiring.

At 12:54 a.m., the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to the home for a report of a structure fire. On arrival, crews saw smoke coming from a single-story house. Crews made entry into the structure and found a fire in a wall that had spread into the attic area where numerous trusses were burnt through. The fire was quickly contained, but not before it caused considerable damage.

The homeowners were home at the time of the fire and were alerted to the fire by their working smoke detector.

Two people and a dog were home at the time of the incident.

The house is inhabitable at this time.

Acting Battalion Chief Wendall Goertzen says, “This is yet another example of how working smoke detectors save lives.” Firefighters ask that you check your smoke detector to ensure it is working properly.
