HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 21-year-old Wichita man was arrested Sunday night after he allegedly fired a weapon at a Hutchinson home twice in the 400 block of Walker.

Devin Dewater faces charges of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of criminal discharge of a firearm, a weapons violation by a felon in possession of stolen property, felony flee and elude, felony interference with law enforcement, driving while suspended and failure to give information on an accident.

Police say he showed up at the home twice and fired two shots. The second time, it was reported to police. An officer was in the area and spotted the vehicle, suspected stolen from Wichita, traveling northbound on Maple. The officer made a traffic stop. However, Dewater then took off northbound and tuned on Avenue B where he hit a curb, disabling the vehicle. He then ran from the scene, but was quickly captured. Police found a .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun inside the vehicle.

According to police, he was attempting to collect a drug debt. The victim apparently agreed to buy methamphetamine from a distributor in Wichita, but failed to pay for it, making Dewater look bad.

No one in the home was injured in the incident, which occurred around 9:25 p.m. Sunday.

In court, he was read the potential charges and his bond was left at $60,000. He’ll be back in court next week for the formal reading of charges.

He has prior convictions for two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, burglary, and criminal use of a financial card. Those convictions are from Kingman and Reno counties.
