HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Local mail carriers are finding mailboxes left wide open.
They suspect thieves are looking for income tax checks.
The open mailboxes were reported in the area west and north of Rice Park. However, the Reno County Sheriff’s Office warns it could happen anywhere.
To avoid tax refund theft, residents are encouraged to have their refunds directly deposited to a checking or savings account.
Law enforcement officials also encourage residents with security cameras to make necessary adjustments that would keep the mailbox in view.
