TOPEKA, Kan. — Kansas Legislators approved an increase in spending on the state’s public schools in hopes of meeting a court mandate after the rancorous final days of debate.

The Senate was up against the clock, however, and had to approve something. In order to keep working, they needed to pass a resolution to continue the session past midnight Sunday.

That included something that angered some in the Kansas House, including State Representative Steve Becker, who talked about the issue:

Any veto would be locked in place should Gov. Jeff Colyer decide to veto anything:

This is part of the school funding bill passed over the weekend that will add $534 million more in school funding over the next five years. It’s now up to the Kansas Supreme Court to decide if this is enough money for schools under the Kansas Constitution.
