Fire crews battle house and brush fire Monday

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Around 2 p.m. Monday, the Hutchinson Fire Department responded to 804 Barnes Lake Road for a house and brush fire.

Crews found an out-of-control grass fire that extended into one home and threatened three others with multiple sheds. Crews worked quickly to stop the spread of the fire before any further damage occurred. Fire quickly spread into a row of cedar trees, which allowed the fire to jump the driveway and spread into an adjacent wooded area. Crews were on scene Monday evening containing hot spots.

Officials determined the homeowner was burning a small ditch and lost control of the fire.

Despite a moderate fire danger Monday, the dry vegetation burned very fast and hot. The Hutchinson Fire Department urges citizens to use extreme caution over the next few days as the fire danger index will climb into the extreme range.

The Hutchinson Fire Department was assisted by the Buhler Fire Department, Reno County Sheriff’s Department, and the Reno County EMS.
