HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A man accused in the shooting of another man in 2015 will receive a mental competency evaluation.

The Newton attorney for Brennan Trass, Kevin Loeffler, filed the motion for the evaluation Wednesday. It was granted by District Judge Trish Rose. The defense wants to know if Trass is competent to stand trial and can assist with his own defense.

Trass is accused of shooting and killing 24-year-old Jose Morales, who was found on the floor of a residence back on Aug. 17, 2015.

They were scheduled to argue the defendant’s pro se motion Thursday morning — where he is asking the court to dismiss the charge over speedy trial issues — but that is now on hold.

As it stands now, Judge Rose says the trial will begin July 23.
