HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The second annual Salthawk Service Day was held this morning throughout Hutchinson. The day was an opportunity for students to get involved with their community. District Spokesperson Ray Hemman says he is always impressed with the students’ reception of the event:

 

 

Students cleaned up around the school, placed bird feeders in Carey Park, played games with residents of a local retirement home and provided free breakfast to first responders, utility linesman and military personnel as a way to say thank you for their work and service.

According to the state Board of Education, students who volunteer in their communities are more likely to vote, stay actively involved in service and feel empowered as citizens.
