HUTCHINSON, Kan. — With the swimming season fast approaching, the Salt City Splash is gearing up for the year.

That includes getting the staff of lifeguards ready. In the past, the pool has dealt with a shortage of lifeguards. However, pool GM Ted Nelson says that won’t be a problem this year:

 

 

Because summer schedules can be so hectic for teens, Nelson says they try to have a large number of guards available for work:

 

For those who want to be a lifeguard, there are several classes held each year through the pool or the YMCA. Nelson says it is a lot of training, about 29 hours worth, and can be a pretty big hit to the pocketbook as well:

 

To the average swimmer, Nelson says it may look like lifeguarding is pretty easy, but that is not true, as guards must pay constant attention to the pool:

 

The Salt City Splash opens Memorial Day weekend.
