HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Kansas wheat crop is still in bad shape, but the numbers remained steady in the latest conditions report.

The Kansas Ag Statistics Service reports that the wheat is still running about 47 percent poor to very poor with another 38 percent in fair condition. Only 15 percent of the wheat is in good to excellent shape.

In central Kansas, 99 percent of the wheat is jointed and 90 percent is in the headed stage. In south central Kansas, the crop is 98 jointed and 92 percent headed.

Now that the crop has come this far, farmers can better assess how much damage was done by the cold April weather and the dry conditions.

Harvest is expected to start around late June.
