A 19-year-old Hutchinson man suspected of numerous car burglaries belonging to law enforcement, public officials and other private citizens was found guilty Monday on all but two counts against him.

A Reno County jury found Sheridan Kiraly not guilty on two of the burglary counts, one from Buhler, that being Laurie Banz’s vehicle and one for the burglary of Hutchinson Police Officer Darrin Pickering’s vehicle. They found Kiraly guilty of fourteen counts of auto burglary and one count of conspiracy to commit auto burglary.

Sentencing in the case has been set for May 11, at 8:30 a-m

The jury got the case against Kiraly on Friday afternoon and deliberated for a couple of hours then one juror was reportedly sick, so they had to bring the alternate in and start their deliberations all over.

Kiraly was arrested in the case along with 21-year-old Victor Smith and 18-year-old Madison Smalling. The burglaries occurring in a period from late June through July 3, of last year.

The state, as you would expect, argued that he committed these burglaries, or at the very least assisted others. The defense contends with the exception of one case where his fingerprints were found inside the vehicle belonging to Hutchinson Police Detective Glen McMurray, there was no evidence that pointed to him actually doing the burglaries.

Public Defender Bonnie Corrado argued at best, it would be possession of stolen property because of the items stolen being in the Ford Explorer that he and Smalling were in when it was stopped by Hutchinson Police Officer James Wilson. In closings, Corrado tried to build reasonable doubt by placing the blame for the burglaries on Smalling, Victor Smith, and possibly Michael Kirk and others.

The jury apparently didn’t buy her argument on most counts, and found him guilty.
