Hutchinson City Manager John Deardoff says he’ll be attending next months meeting in Garden City regarding the future of the Amtrak Southwest Chief. The meeting is expected to include officials from both Amtrak and BNSF Railway.
The meeting is being held in hopes to coming to some agreement over the line that Amtrak uses through western Kansas which is owned by BNSF and is in disrepair.
The line is fine for freight trains, but can not sustain 79-mile-per hour passenger train service. BNSF doesn’t want to spend the money to renovate the line, and maintain the line that it owns, but doesn’t use in New Mexico.
It could force Amtrak to reroute the chief south through Oklahoma cutting off service to Dodge City, Garden City and a number of towns in Colorado and New Mexico.
Deardoff says he may take at least one member of the City Council with him. Reno County Administrator Gary Meagher says he has no plans to attend the meeting, which is set for April 10.
