HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 32-year-old man arrested June 4 for allegedly being in a stolen vehicle and attempting to steal others has now been formally charged.

Jeffery Lynn Renfro faces 11 charges including burglary, three counts of theft of property — three vehicles — and attempted theft of a fourth.

Renfro is accused of breaking into a business at 2330 E. 4th. He left another vehicle at that address.

Police were given his name and went to his home. Meanwhile, he returned to the vehicle he left behind, which was believed to be stolen. When police arrived, he took off running. Officers attempted to tase him at one point, but it didn’t work.

Renfro then allegedly tried to steal another vehicle, but the keys weren’t in it. He tried to steal a third vehicle, but — as he tried to drive over some old engine blocks to escape — he became high-centered. Renfro refused to leave the vehicle. Officers broke a window and pulled him out.

During a court appearance Monday, he again didn’t seem to understand or remember any of it. Magistrate Judge Cheryl Allen denied any bond modification because of his state of mind. His attorney, Shannon Crane, was in the courtroom. There may be a mental evaluation requested at some point.

He apparently has other cases pending, so he’ll be back in court Wednesday.
