CONCORDIA – Playing a Jayhawk Conference Western Division match on the road for the first time this season, the Hutchinson Community College volleyball team swept Cloud Countyon  Wednesday night at the Thunderdome.

Sophomore Cassie Wiley had 11 kills on .529 hitting to lead the Lady Dragons to a 28-26, 25-20, 25-20 victory over the Thunderbirds.

Hutchinson (5-6, 3-0 Jayhawk West) won for the third-straight match and stayed perfect in the Jayhawk West with a critical match against defending Region VI champion Barton at 6:30 p.m.on Monday at the Sports Arena.

“This was a really important win to help us build confidence,” Wiley said. “We were more intense that we were against Garden City. We kept the intensity longer. Now we have to be really focused for Barton.”

Hutchinsonwas able to utilize its middle attack more efficiently because of a solid passing game. In addition to Wiley hitting .529, freshman Shayne Haley had six kills on .357 hitting.

“Anytime we can utilize our middles, we have a strong pass,”HCC head coach Sarah Myers said. “When both middles are successful we are better. Cassie brings so much excitement when she gets big kills, it brings excitement to the rest of the team.”

Sophomore Jordan Rehm had nine kills on .273 hitting. Freshman setter Hayley Young had 29 assists.

Rehm and freshman Alicia Riffel had 10 digs each. The Lady Dragons had 11 team blocks. Haley and Wiley had five blocks each.

“It was nice to be on the road and pick up a win in three,” Myers said. “I thought we should have brought more intensity, but as a whole, I was happy with what we did.”

The Lady Dragons will get their first real time off since the start of the season, getting five days before meeting Barton at the Sports Arena. Barton is ranked 11th in the latest NJCAA Division I volleyball poll.
