LAKIN – A 58-year-old pilot from Colorado is in a Wichita hospital after he crashed his fixed wing single engine plane Monday morning in Kearney County.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crop dusting plane flown by David M. Burr of Montrose, Colorado was flying northwest when the right wing of his plane clipped a support line to a 305-foot cell phone tower. The plane then cartwheeled to the ground landing nose first, flipping one full time and landing facing southwest.

Burr was first taken to the Kearney County Hospital, then later flown to Via-Cristi St. Francis Regional Medical Center where he was listed in critical condition.

The Kansas Department of Transportation closed a portion of U-S 50 and U-S 400 highway’s according to their website, this occurring close to where the plane crashed, which occurred about 9:20 a-m, about two and half miles east of Lakin.

The crash is still under investigation.
