Dragon golf second after Wild Horse opening round

GOTHENBURG, Neb. — Charlie Herbert shot a 1-over 73 in wet scoring conditions to lead the Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team to second place after the opening round of the NJCAA District III Preview at Wild Horse Golf Club.

The second round was supposed to be played Monday afternoon, but was called off. The tournament, weather permitting, will be completed with a single-round on Tuesday morning.

The Blue Dragons shot a 15-over 303 in the opening round on Monday and trail Indian Hills by 14 strokes. Iowa Western and Dodge City are tied for third after 307s. Garden City is fifth at 315.

Herbert’s 73 ties him for fourth individually. He trails Indian Hills’ George Clark by four shots after Day 1.

Charlie Crockett and Peyton Austin are tied for eighth after 3-over 75s on Monday. The Blue Dragons also had to count Nathan McCulloch’s 80 in the team score. Sophomore Lake Leroux shot an 82.

Individual player Max Ontjes shot a 7-over 79 and is tied for 23rd.
