HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Discussion came up during Tuesday’s Reno County Commission meeting regarding the recent death in the Reno County Correctional Facility.

 

Gary Robbins was found unresponsive in his cell last week. He died of a self-inflicted head injury when he dove head first off the top rung of his bed, according to Sheriff Randy Henderson. County Commissioner Dan Deming asked about the death, but Henderson did not want to divulge information in open forum:

 

 

Henderson says the staff went through the appropriate protocol with the death of Robbins. Once revival efforts were unsuccessful, Henderson said the entire cell block was evacuated. Inmates were moved to other areas and the scene was sealed off. All video of the area was contained and officers began writing reports. All of that information was available and released to the KBI once it arrived on the scene.

It is not known when the KBI will finish its investigation. Robbins was jailed for violation of his parole out of Sedgwick County and was awaiting a hearing on possible inappropriate contact with a minor in a Reno County case.
