HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The Hutchinson Salthawks (2-5, 1-4) defeated the Salina South Cougars (0-7, 0-5) Friday night 45-24.

Neither team scored in the first quarter.

With 11:22 left before halftime, the Salthawks fumbled the ball away. Despite great field position, the Cougars came away with just a 27-yard field goal.

The Salthawks scored their first touchdown with 6:04 left in the second quarter to go up 7-3.

Hutchinson scored its second touchdown with 4:30 left to take a 13-3 advantage.

The Salthawks’ third touchdown of the second quarter was scored with 1:17 remaining. That gave the Salthawks a 20-3 lead at halftime.

Salina South pushed back in the third quarter to score 21 points against Hutchinson. The Cougars took a 24-20 lead into the final stanza.

South would not score again.

Hutchinson scored the final 25 points of the game. Eastin Heneha’s pick-six capped Hutchinson’s 45-24 victory.
