COFFEYVILLE, Kan. — The Hutchinson Community College Blue Dragons defeated the Coffeyville Red Ravens Saturday night 24-14.
Dezmon Jackson opened the scoring with a 90-yard touchdown run on Hutchinson’s second possession. The 90-yard scamper is the second-longest run in Blue Dragon football history.
Coffeyville tied the game with a 7-play, 39-yard scoring drive. The drive was capped by Marco Lee’s 1-yard burst.
The 7-7 tie with 7:37 left in the second quarter was short lived.
The Blue Dragons immediately answered with a Dezmon Jackson 34-yard TD run.
Jackson finished the day with 10 carries for 153 yards and two touchdowns.
It was the fourth time this season Jackson went over the 100-yard mark.
For the fifth game in a row, Jackson found the end zone.
The Dragon defense extended Hutchinson’s advantage 50 seconds before the break when Jalen Pinkney pressured Red Raven quarterback Carson Proctor. Monty Montgomery was waiting for the ball when it popped loose and took it 25 yards to the house on a pick-six.
It was a rough night for Proctor and the Red Raven offense. Proctor finished just 8 of 27 for 88 yards. He was intercepted twice. Thirty-four of his passing yards came on broken coverage late. It was Proctor’s only TD pass. He found Eterious Giles with 8:44 to play.
Proctor was sacked nine times.
The Dragon defense held Coffeyville to 1 of 18 on third down.
Unfortunately, the Dragon offense sputtered also. Hutchinson only converted twice on 14 third down attempts.
QB Mason Schucker struggled to hit open receivers.
For only the third time this season, Schucker finished with less than 100 yards passing.
Schucker was 10 of 22 for 88 yards with one pick.
Thanks to errors by the Blue Dragons on three separate punt returns, the Red Ravens snapped the ball 23 more times offensively.
Despite the extra opportunities, Coffeyville finished with 50 fewer yards from scrimmage than the Blue Dragons.
Coffeyville also possessed the ball for 4 minutes, 12 seconds longer than Hutchinson.
It was the quick strikes by Jackson early and the Dragon defense that proved to be the difference in the game.
Sebastian Garcia added a 31-yard field goal in the third quarter.
Proctor’s late TD pass to Giles gave Coffeyville some life, but the Red Ravens would possess the ball just one more time after that.
Hutchinson sent Jackson back in to run out the clock.
He shared backfield duties with Drake Bolus and Andrew Lee.
Bolus finished with 37 yards on 10 touches while Lee carried the ball six times for 29 yards.
Hutchinson Athletic Director Josh Gooch served as the interim head coach Saturday night. Rion Rhoades was suspended for two unsportsmanlike penalties he received in last week’s 16-13 win vs. Highland. Gooch was happy to hand the No. 4 team in the nation back unblemished:
The Blue Dragons (7-1, 5-0) travel to Dodge City (3-5, 1-3) next Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
