TOPEKA – A Topeka resident who wished to remain anonymous claimed $1 million yesterday and became Kansas’ first Powerball Match 5 million dollar prize winner under the game’s new prize structure. Prior to January 15, 2012, Powerball players who matched all five white-ball numbers won $200,000, but, under recent game enhancements, that prize is now worth $1 million.

Winning numbers in the April 4 drawing were 1-24-33-45-49 and Powerball 6; the $1 million dollar winner matched the first five numbers.

The winning ticket was purchased at Dillon’s 87, located at 5311 SW 22nd Place in Topeka.

Key features for the new Powerball game are starting jackpots that doubled from $20 million to $40 million and a cash second prize that quintupled from $200,000 to $1 million. The Power Play option is still available for an extra $1 per play. Instead of randomly multiplying prizes by two to five times, Power Play now moves each prize level up by a set amount. The top prize of $1 million is doubled to $2 million and the $10,000 prize quadruples to $40,000. All other prizes are also increased (with the exception of the jackpot).

Powerball is played in 42 States, Washington D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
