A 25-year-old Hutchinson man, convicted and sentenced to 96-months in prison for kidnapping and aggravated burglary after holding a McPherson family against their will, still faces additional charges here in Reno County.

On such charge against Andre Chatham is trafficking in contraband in a correctional institution.

That case was scheduled for jury trial this week, and had also been scheduled for a status hearing on Monday, but both have been continued because of him possibly entering a plea, but no date has been set for a hearing on the matter.

The case has to do with bringing contraband into the Hutchinson Correctional Facility on July 16, of 2011. The contraband being marijuana. Prison officials say that he had visited with someone at the central unit facility. On his way back to his cell, he was patted down in what they call the shakedown room, which is normal procedure. One officer says he noticed something unusual with one of his boots. It apparently had a slit and inside were two rubber balloons which allegedly contained the drugs.

Chatham also has a pending forgery case going back to 2009, which is also pending in court. That case going back to March 9, 2009.

Chatham was convicted in a case in McPherson where he along with Michael Darnell Jackson allegedly broke into a McPherson home restraining four adults inside and then taking one of the men to an ATM where he was forced to empty his bank account. Chatham and Jackson were captured later in the afternoon in two separate traffic stops here in Hutchinson.

Jackson was acquitted of all charges, while a different jury convicted Chatham.

Chatham was on parole for a 2003 conviction of aggravated robbery, and theft for another McPherson County case and had been released from prison in July of 2009, the same month as these crimes.
