BNSF Railway and the City of Hutchinson are ready to begin work on the railroad crossings at Main Street.

The Hutchinson City Council approved spending 54-thousand dollars for their share of the cost of replacing the two grade crossings on Main. BNSF had planned to replace the main line crossing due to track conditions but wanted to leave the siding or north track as is. The city then stepped in and worked with the railroad to fix both crossings.

The work could begin later this month.

Total cost of the crossing replacement is in excess of 200-thousand dollars. The city will also be required to pay for any paving of the approaches to the tracks that’s needed.

Plans are also in the works to replace the crossings at both Walnut and Washington in the future.

Over the past two years BNSF has replaced crossings at both Monroe and Adams.
