The 23-year-old Hutchinson man who was allegedly involved in a police chase on December 6 was in court Wednesday where he found to be competent to stand trial.

Jason Thiel is charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, felony flee and elude, interference with law enforcement, two counts of criminal damage, possession of stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended and no proof of insurance.

His attorney, Alice Osburn asked for a mental evaluation and that was granted. According to a report from Horizon’s Mental Health Center, he is, so that puts this case, and one other back on the docket. Judge Joe McCarville scheduled it for a preliminary hearing for June 7, at 1:30 p-m.

The case starts with him allegedly being in a stolen vehicle and leading police on two chases, and at one point, allegedly ramming two police cruisers and attempting to run over officer Terry Martin. He then left the parking lot, but eventually he and his passenger Bryson Allen jumped from the moving vehicle. The passenger managed to get away, but Thiel was arrested and taken to jail.

He’s also charged in another case from September of last year where he’s charged with two counts of felony theft, and interference with law enforcement. On September 16, he alleged jeans from Sears, and shirts from JC Penney. He then resisted arrest when officers attempted to take him into custody.

He’s no stranger to law enforcement with previous convictions for aiding a felon, obstruction, and theft.
