ABBYVILLE – Reno County Sheriff Deputies worked a crash scene on U-S 50 and K-14 highway.

Between 3:30 and 3:45 p-m, units were dispatched to this location for the report of a crash involving a semi and a pickup with an elderly man possibly trapped in his vehicle.

That man has been identified at the scene as 82-year-old Donald Dye of Kingman, the founder of Don Dye Company in Kingman. Driver of the semi is 36-year-old David Lawson of Hoisington, who was not injured.

When emergency officials arrived, they found a 2004 Ford, F-250 pickup had been struck by a 1999 Peterbuilt semi towing a grain trailer.

The investigation shows that the pickup was south bound on K-14 and failed to yield to the east-bound semi on U-S 50. The semi was apparently following a pilot car that was leading vehicles through a work zone, and the pilot car pulled over, and that’s when Dye pulled in front of Lawson’s semi.

Dye was pinned in the vehicle until freed by District-4 Fire units and Reno County E-M-S. He was listed as critical at the scene and was being transported by ground E-M-S until an Eagle Med Helicopter could meet with them along the route to a Wichita Hospital which at this time we were told would be Wesley Medical Center.
