HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A 33-year-old Hutchinson Correctional Facility inmate was bound over for trial Monday on three charges involving the stabbing of a correctional officer.

Mark Baker is now charged with battery of a corrections officer, or in the alternative aggravated battery, and trafficking contraband in a correctional institution. The alleged crimes occurred on Dec. 6, 2018.

It started when the correctional officer told Baker to go back to his cell. Baker refused. The officer told the court that he had to tell Baker three or four times, yet Baker refused. At one point, they were near his cell cussing at each other. Baker apparently grabbed a shank and attacked the officer with it. The officer suffered six abrasions, including at least two puncture wounds.

The officer was taken to the Hutchinson Clinic where he was stabilized. He was then taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center as a trauma patient. He spent a day in the hospital for treatment, then he was released.

Baker wanted to speak with a counselor at the prison, but there was no paperwork associated with that request, so the request was denied.

Because he is at the prison, the defense wants arraignment as soon as possible. That could happen Tuesday in front of District Judge Trish Rose.

Baker is serving time for numerous convictions out of Labette County including first-degree murder, abuse of a child, theft, obstruction, and possession of drugs and paraphernalia. That case goes back to 2011.
