Two area lakes impacted by flooding

CHENEY, Kan. — With all of the flooding in the area, camping at Cheney Lake this coming weekend will be difficult with most areas closed.

Cheney Park manager Mitch Schwartz says about 90 percent of the park is closed because of the flooding and the few places that are open have already been reserved.

That includes three locations on the west side of the lake that are open, but they’ll be full as will one location on the east side of the lake.

As for boating, all of the areas to put your boat in the lake are underwater. Schwartz says boaters will have to put their boat in the water at their own risk.

He says many of the roads to get to the Cheney campgrounds are also closed because of high water.

As for Kanopolis Lake in Ellsworth County, the Sandyshore and Sandplum primitive campgrounds are closed because of high water levels. Langley Point Beach is closed as is the Buzzard Bay boat ramp.

Kanopolis also closed all access to the horse and hiking trails in the Horsethief Canyon and wildlife area.

These closures more than likely will be through Memorial Day weekend.
