HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Despite seeing its five-run lead whittled down by the end, the Hutchinson Monarchs still held off Wichita Sluggers for a 7-6 victory on Friday. Wichita Sluggers put up five runs in the failed comeback. Adam Theis, Colton Bertus, and Zach Baxley fueled the rally with RBIs.
There was plenty of action on the basepaths as Hutchinson Monarchs collected eight hits and Wichita Sluggers had 11.
Hutchinson Monarchs fired up the offense in the first inning. Jackson Loftin singled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run.
In the top of the fourth inning, Wichita Sluggers tied things up at five. Bertus drove in three when he doubled.
Hutchinson Monarchs pulled away for good with two runs in the fifth inning. In the fifth Taylor Barber hit a solo homer and Easton Rindt doubled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run.
Wichita Sluggers scored three runs in the fourth inning. Wichita Sluggers scored its runs on a double by Bertus.
Dawson Dreher led things off on the mound for Hutchinson Monarchs. He surrendered two runs on five hits over three innings, striking out two and walking zero.
Drake Girrard led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Wichita Sluggers. He lasted five innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs while striking out five. Lumpkin and Easton Conrad entered the game from the bullpen, throwing one and two-thirds innings and one and one-third innings respectively.
Hutchinson Monarchs socked one home run on the day. Barber had a dinger in the fifth inning.
Loftin led Hutchinson Monarchs with two hits in five at bats.
Wichita Sluggers had 11 hits in the game. Bertus, Caden Kohout, Hartman, and Baxley each had multiple hits for Wichita Sluggers. Bertus went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Wichita Sluggers in hits.
