HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A local man charged with rape and aggravated criminal sodomy wants his confession suppressed. He is also seeking a new attorney.

Nathan Allen Crum is accused of sexually assaulting a local woman he met online. Crum invited her to his home to watch a movie. He’s then accused of forcing her into a sexual relationship after she repeatedly said no. Crum admitted they had sex, but claims the sexual relationship was consensual. The alleged crimes occurred Aug. 17.

Reno County District Judge Tim Chambers scheduled a hearing over the issues Monday, but that didn’t happen because Crum filed the motions without the knowledge of his attorney, Steve Osburn.

Crum wants a new attorney and also wants the case dropped over speedy trial issues, according to Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder. The problem for Crum is that once he filed the motions on his own, that stopped the speedy trial rule, meaning the time for these issues to be resolved counts against him.

The trial will be delayed if Crum is granted a new attorney. Crum should find out later this week if he will be given a new attorney.
