BNSF releases 2Q earnings

HUTCHINSON — BNSF’s second-quarter earnings were on the positive side, despite the spring flooding that slowed rail service and caused service disruptions in the Midwest.

The nation’s second-largest railroad reported total revenue of $5.8 billion — a slight increase over the previous year. Operating expenses fell by 3% to $3.8 billion for the quarter.

The railroad saw declines in consumer and ag shipments while coal volume increased for the first time in several quarters. Total shipments fell by 4%.

BNSF is the second-largest property tax payer in Reno County and carries a total valuation of more than $9.8 million.
