HUTCHINSON, Kan. — A South Hutchinson liquor store owner says he has turned in a petition to the County Clerk’s Office with enough signatures to bring Sunday liquor sales in South Hutchinson up for a vote.

Greg Dovel had been collecting signatures of South Hutchinson residents trying to drum up support for the vote. Dovel tried unsuccessfully to get the City Council to pass a resolution allowing the sales just as he opened a new business selling alcohol and tobacco products.

According to Deputy Elections Officer Jenna Fager, Dovel gathered 112 signatures and 70 were validated by the clerk’s office, more than the 50 needed for the petition. The South Hutchinson City Council will now set a date for the vote, which will likely come during the November general election.

Dovel says he just wants the matter in the hands of the voters. “I’m fully prepared for whatever the people vote,” Dovel said. “This is for everybody to have a voice.”

Dovel says he wanted to thank the Reno County Clerk’s Office for answering his questions and making sure the petition was done in the proper way.
